On 22 July 2026, the Niger authorities initiated rehabilitation work on the 115-kilometre section of National Highway 29 (RN29) from Tsernaoua to Tahoua. The project, funded through a public-private partnership, will improve traffic on this strategic axis linking the RN1 to the Tahoua region and the north of the country.
The Minister of Equipment and Infrastructure, Colonel Major Salissou Mahaman Salissou, officially launched the work in Tsernaoua. Made in 1975 and rehabilitated for the last time in 2011, this 115-kilometre road gradually deteriorated, affecting traffic conditions and economic exchanges in the areas served.
The project is financed to the tune of more than CFAF 82 billion under a public-private partnership contract with the Nigerian company EGBTP. The work is planned for 24 months, under the supervision of the Art and Engineering Group.
The project is planning a new asphalt concrete-coated pavement with a width of 7 metres and 1.5 metres on each side for a total platform of 10 metres.
The project also includes a number of related infrastructure, including boreholes, classrooms and fences for riparian schools, integrated health centres, latrines blocks, and rural runway ramps. The Minister also asked the company in charge of the work to give priority to the recruitment of local labour.
Once rehabilitated, the RN29 must facilitate the movement of agro-sylvo-pastoral products to major urban centres and improve market access. It must also strengthen the service to Tahoua and northern Niger, while improving access to basic social services for the population.
The project is part of a broader programme to upgrade the Niger's road network, which includes the rehabilitation of the Dogonduchi-Birni N-Konni-Tsernaoua axis, 159.6 km long, as well as the development of the Malbaza-Dabnou and N-Karkadan-Tahoua roads.
