The Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has noted the progress of the work of the future Industrial Port of Kalemie, in the province of Tanganyika. This infrastructure, carried out in public-private partnership, must strengthen the logistics capacity on Lake Tanganyika and facilitate the transport of goods, including mining products.
The Congolese Deputy Prime Minister responsible for Transport, Jean-Pierre Bemba, carried out an inspection visit on 7 August on the construction site of the new industrial port of Kalemie, located in Mtoa, Tanganyika province.
According to the Ministry of Transport, this mission assessed progress and visited the various components of the project.
The Minister said he was satisfied with the level of execution of the project while asking managers to keep the pace of work in order to meet the schedule.
The project includes dredging operations, the construction of wharfs, warehouses, administrative buildings and the construction of logistical infrastructure to increase transport capacity and trade in this part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
According to information provided by the authorities, the future port must also facilitate the transport of lithium concentrates to Tanzania via Lake Tanganyika.
This infrastructure is being implemented through a public-private partnership between the Congolese State and a consortium composed of Jintai Mining PTE Ltd and Tembo Majengo Company SARL.
Golden Lake Logistics SARL is responsible for the implementation of the work. The Minister's visit was attended by the Deputy Governor of Tanganyika Province, Isidore Kabwe Longo, and a delegation of provincial ministers.
According to the proponents of the project, the industrial port of Kalemie must contribute to the development of trade and mining activities in the region while improving the connectivity of the province of Tanganyika with the other transport corridors of the Great Lakes region.
