The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is strengthening its presence in Mozambique with the launch of Afungi Shuttle, a new maritime service to support the supply of the Mozambique LNG gas project. This new service is intended to facilitate the movement of goods to the Afungi site in the north of the country, while work on the largest liquefied natural gas project in sub-Saharan Africa has entered a new phase.

Announced at the end of July 2026, the Afungi Shuttle service is based on two regular marine rotations linking Nacala and Maputo to the Afungi site. Both ports will play a central role in the supply of the site.

Nacala, connected by rail to Malawi and Zambia, is a strategic gateway for goods from within the continent, while Maputo provides connections to South Africa and major international maritime networks.

The new service is intended to transport construction materials, industrial equipment, machinery and spare parts necessary for the development of the Mozambique LNG project.

MSC indicates that shippers will be able to manage all their operations through a single reservation and a single business contact, with connections to Afungi from Europe, the Mediterranean, Asia, the Americas, the Middle East and Southern Africa. This organization aims to simplify logistics operations to a site in an isolated area of northern Mozambique.

The launch of this service comes in the context of the resumption of the Mozambique LNG project, relaunched by TotalEnergys in January 2026 after almost five years of interruption following the attack on Palma in 2021.

According to the data provided by the operator, 42% of the construction site is now completed and more than 6000 workers are involved. The first production of liquefied natural gas is expected in 2029, with the planned creation of 7000 direct jobs for Mozambicans.

Beyond the logistical aspect, the arrival of MSC illustrates the strengthening of the infrastructure needed to implement this major energy project.

The Mozambican authorities estimate that Mozambique LNG could generate up to $35 billion in government revenue over its entire operating cycle, making this project an important lever for the economic development of the country and for the transport and logistics sector in Southern Africa.
