Kenya: Heavy rains could disrupt freight flows

Hapag-Lloyd warns about the risks of logistical disruption in Kenya between October and December 2026, due to higher than seasonal rainfall. Mombasa harbour and land transport could be affected, although no weather-related disturbances were reported at this stage.

According to weather forecasts, much of Kenya is expected to experience heavy rainfall in the last quarter of 2026, with localized flood risks.

In a notice addressed to its customers, the German shipping carrier states that these conditions could affect operations at the port of Mombasa and the transport of goods to the interior of the country.

Potential disruptions include ship operations, access to terminals and container handling. Road and rail networks could also be slowed down, particularly along the northern corridor, which links the port of Mombasa to the East African markets.

Shipments in transit to Uganda are particularly affected. Delays could also include the removal of imports, the entry of goods for export, deliveries and the return of empty containers.

To limit the risks, Hapag-Lloyd recommends that shippers provide additional time margins and anticipate abductions and deliveries.

The carrier also advises to check the condition of the containers prior to loading, to protect the goods against moisture and to follow ship schedules as well as deadlines for delivery of cargoes.

The company states that it will continue to monitor the situation with port actors and land transport partners, and will inform its customers in case of significant operational disruptions.
