China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) and the French shipowner CMA CGM signed, on 28 August 2026 in Shenzhen, China, a Memorandum of Understanding covering port infrastructure, logistics, transport and low carbon supply chains. The agreement includes Africa, China, South-East Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.
The protocol provides for the exploration of projects covering logistics corridors, dry ports, container depots, warehouses and inland logistics platforms.
The two groups are also planning to develop multimodal solutions, digital services, terminal automation and port infrastructure integrating lower carbon technologies. However, no specific projects in Africa have been announced at this stage.
This cooperation is based on relations already established in several African markets. In Cameroon, the subsidiary of CCCC, China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), has built the container terminal of the port of Kribi before joining the consortium concessionaire of the terminal alongside CMA CGM and Bolloré.
In Nigeria, CHEC is also a partner of CMA CGM in the operation of the Lekki Freeport container terminal. These experiences constitute the main African anchors for cooperation between the two groups.
In Cameroon, the development of Kribi's hinterland is among the issues associated with port infrastructure. CMA CGM is present in particular in the area through CEVA Logistics, which has a logistics base of 30,000 m2 announced in 2025.
Other infrastructure projects could also correspond to the areas identified in the protocol, including the study of a railway link of approximately 185 kilometres between Édéa, Kribi, Lolabé and Campo, as well as the Ngoumou dry port project. However, these projects are not linked at this stage to the new agreement between CCCC and CMA CGM.
