Ivory Coast: The Port of San Pedro receives a new handling crane to strengthen the capacity of the container terminal

The San Pedro Terminal (TSP), in Côte d'Ivoire, put into operation on 30 July 2026 a new latest generation mobile crane to improve container handling performance. This investment is part of the strategy of modernization of the Autonomous Port of San Pedro (PASP), faced with the increase of the size of the ships and the growth of containerized flows.

The Liebherr LHM 600 Evolution 6 type crane is now the most powerful of the five terminal handling equipment.

With a tower of about 60 metres in height and a range of 61 metres, it is designed to handle container carriers with greater capacity while improving safety, operator visibility and the speed of loading and unloading operations. It also replaces a crane destroyed during a fire in December 2025.

With this acquisition, the San Pedro Terminal increases its crane fleet from four to five units and strengthens its annual processing capacity, currently set at 200,000 TEUs (equivalent to 20 feet).

According to the officials of the terminal and the autonomous port of San Pedro, this equipment must help to reduce the port times of ships, improve the productivity of operations and accompany Ivorian exports of cocoa, coffee, wood, rubber, cotton and the processing of imported goods.

This investment comes as the Autonomous Port of San Pedro continues its modernization programme. According to the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) published in June 2026 by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, the port was ranked 9th most efficient container port in Africa, 2nd in West Africa and 211st worldwide in 2025.
